Clarity, understanding and practical support — for ages 4 to 25.
If your child, teenager or young adult finds it hard to focus, feels easily overwhelmed, or struggles to organise daily tasks, it can be difficult to know what’s typical and what may be part of ADHD. Many families seek assessment when everyday life — at school, university, work or home — begins to feel more challenging than expected.
At Melbourne Children’s Psychology Clinic (MCPC), our ADHD assessments help move from uncertainty to understanding. We explore each person’s strengths, support needs and developmental context, providing clear, practical recommendations to help daily life feel more manageable and confident.
When an ADHD Assessment May Be Helpful
An ADHD assessment may be helpful when patterns of attention, organisation or regulation are persistent and impacting daily life across home, school, university or work.
It may be appropriate when a child, teen or young adult:
Attention & Focus
Finds it hard to focus, listen or follow instructions
Daydreams or “zones out,” particularly during tasks or conversations
Is easily distracted or forgets important details
Organisation & Executive Functioning
Frequently loses things or struggles to stay organised
Has difficulty planning, prioritising or managing time
Finds it challenging to complete tasks independently
Hyperactivity & Impulsivity
Appears restless, fidgety or constantly “on the move”
Acts impulsively or speaks without thinking
Emotional & Social Impact
Becomes easily overwhelmed when tasks feel demanding
Struggles with social cues or maintaining friendships
What an ADHD Assessment Involves
Our assessments are comprehensive, evidence-based and tailored to developmental stage and context. The process is designed to build a clear understanding of strengths, challenges and support needs.
The Assessment Process May Include
Parent and Young Person Interviews
A detailed conversation to understand history, strengths, concerns and how difficulties show up across different settings.
Teacher Input (with consent)
Information from school or educational settings to build a full picture of functioning across environments.
Standardised Diagnostic Questionnaires
Evidence-based screening tools assessing attention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.
Screening for Co-Occurring Experiences
Consideration of anxiety, mood, learning differences and other neurodevelopmental factors that may influence presentation.
Optional Cognitive or Learning Assessment
Where relevant, further assessment of thinking, attention or learning patterns to clarify support needs.
After the Assessment
You receive a clear, practical written report outlining:
Whether ADHD diagnostic criteria are met
Identified strengths and areas requiring support
Recommendations for home, school, university or work
Referral or treatment options where appropriate
The goal is clarity and direction — not labels for the sake of labels.
Why Families Choose MCPC for ADHD Assessments
Our aim is to help young people feel understood, capable and supported — not changed.
ADHD Can Look Different in Different People
ADHD does not present in the same way for everyone. Some people experience noticeable restlessness or impulsivity, while others appear quiet but struggle internally with focus, organisation or overwhelm.
Inattention May Include
Forgetfulness or losing track of details
Daydreaming or “checking out,” particularly under pressure
Difficulty starting tasks or drifting off mid-task
ADHD Can Also Present As
Constant movement or restlessness
Talking quickly or interrupting
Acting before thinking
Difficulty waiting, pausing or pacing oneself
Hyperactivity & Impulsivity May Include
High energy and visible activity
Quiet, thoughtful individuals who feel internally overwhelmed
Masked or compensated difficulties that become more noticeable under stress
Our assessments are designed to understand the full picture — not just surface behaviours.

A feedback session in clear, everyday language
Individualised strategies for home, school, university or work
