Cognitive & Learning Assessments in Melbourne

Understanding how your child learns — so they can feel confident and supported (age 4-25)

Some children love learning but still struggle with reading, writing, maths, concentration or organisation. Others appear capable but find it difficult to show what they know in class or on tests. These challenges can affect confidence, enjoyment of learning and daily school life.

A cognitive or learning assessment helps you understand how your child learns, why certain tasks may feel harder, and what supports will make a meaningful difference.

At Melbourne Children’s Psychology Clinic (MCPC), we provide warm, developmentally informed assessments for children and adolescents. Our goal is to provide clarity, understanding, and practical recommendations that help at home and school.

When a Learning Assessment May Be Helpful

A learning assessment may be helpful when a child or teen is experiencing ongoing academic difficulties that are not improving with usual classroom support.

You may consider an assessment if your child or teen:

Academic Difficulties

  • Struggles with reading, spelling, writing or mathematics

  • Works hard, but progress does not reflect effort

  • Finds school tasks consistently demanding or overwhelming

Academic Difficulties

  • Has difficulty staying focused or completing work

  • Struggles with organisation or following multi-step instructions

Emotional Impact

  • Avoids schoolwork or appears anxious about learning

  • Shows frustration, reduced confidence or school-related stress

Unclear or Mixed Feedback

  • Has received inconsistent feedback from teachers over time

  • May require accommodations, learning adjustments or funding support

A Learning Assessment Helps Answer

What is getting in the way — and what will help?

It provides clarity about learning strengths, areas of difficulty and practical recommendations to support progress.

What the Assessment Helps With

A learning assessment provides a clearer understanding of how your child thinks, learns and processes information.

It can help with:

Understanding Your Child’s Learning Profile

Identifying strengths, preferred learning styles and areas that require support.

Identifying Learning Differences

Clarifying whether specific learning differences such as dyslexia, dysgraphia or dyscalculia are present.

Clarifying Attention and Executive Functioning

Understanding how attention, memory and organisation influence learning performance.

Guiding School Supports and Adjustments

Providing practical recommendations for classroom strategies, accommodations and learning plans.

Building Confidence and Capability

Helping your child better understand their own learning style and feel more confident in their abilities.

Why Families Choose MCPC

Our aim is to help young people feel understood, capable and supported — not changed.

Types of Assessments We Offer
