The Selective Mutism Clinic

What is Selective Mutism?

Selective Mutism (previously known as Elective Mutism) usually begins in early childhood and occurs when a child consistently fails to talk in at least one specific social situation, whilst being able to talk freely in other situations. It often becomes apparent when a child first starts school. A common example is a child who is unable to talk within the classroom but is able to talk with ease at home with immediate family members.

Selective Mutism is commonly understood as a form of social anxiety where the child fears that their attempts to communicate will be negatively judged by others. Their anxiety can be paralyzing, leading to associated behaviours such as a blank expression, lack of eye contact and other noticeable body postures (e.g, appearing stiff).

A common myth is that these children will “grow out of it” however; the evidence indicates that this is not the case and that early intervention is crucial.

The Selective Mutism Clinic at MCPC

Over the years, MCPC has received a high number of referrals relating to Selective Mutism which has led to a growing pool of knowledge and experience within this area. This is partially due to a number of our psychologists that share a special interest in Selective Mutism. The Selective Mutism Clinic at MCPC aims to draw from these collective learnings and deliver best practice interventions to families that attend our clinic.

The clinic is overseen by MCPC Directors, Dr Swinburne and Dr McFarlane with the invaluable contribution of Tamera Clancy (Senior Clinical Psychologist, MCPC) who has a long standing special interest and significant expertise in this area.

Like all referrals to MCPC, families undergo a comprehensive assessment that informs an intervention plan specific to the individual needs of your child and family. In addition, the Selective Mutism Clinic includes:

  • Standardised screening and assessment tools that measure social, emotional, behavioural and developmental issues known to be associated with Selective Mutism.
  • Gold standard therapeutic interventions that draw from evidence based research specific to Selective Mutism.
  • Pre and post outcome measures to enhance treatment outcomes.

Families who attend the Selective Mutism Clinic at MCPC will receive a registration pack prior to their first appointment. The registration pack includes a Parent Form and a Teacher Form to be completed prior to the first appointment.

Children with Selective Mutism often fear new situations and unfamiliar people. Clinicians working in the clinic utilize several strategies to increase a child’s sense of security when they come to the clinic, including:

  • parents remaining in the room
  • allowing your child to adjust to the new surroundings and feel comfortable
  • having several non-verbal activities and games on hand that can engage your child
